Two Way Radio Functions

The term two-way radio is a technology that allows individuals to contact each other by use of radio waves. You might also know the term “walkie talkie” used for unlicensed radio devices (DV-4475). The term two-way radio covers both the unlicensed radio equipment and the licensed radio equipment.

What Frequencies Do Two-Way Radio Use?
Two-way radio works between the following frequency ranges, which are divided into two categories:

  • Very High Frequency (VHF) – Range between 30 MHz and 300 MHz (MHz – Megahertz)
  • Ultra-High Frequency (UHF) – Range between 300 MHz and 1 GHz (GHz – Gigahertz)

From the above, most two-way radio equipment falls into the 136 – 174MHz and 400 – 470MHz parts of the spectrum and must be licenced accordingly.

Is a license required?
The simple answer is yes. Each country has its own organisation responsible for the regulation and allocation of licences, noting that some two-way radio frequencies are allocated as licence-free.

The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) is the official regulator of the South African communications, broadcasting, and postal services sectors: https://www.icasa.org.za/

Radio licencing can be complicated and long-winded; however, Emcom Wireless is always happy to assist our clients with this process.
